Brief Answer:
Surgery is not advisable for a 5mm stone.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist, i must advise you to take an informed decision.
A stone less than 6mm, usually may pass spontaneously, with conservative treatment.
You can very well wait for about 2-3 weeks and try medical treatment.
Keep surgery (endoscopic laser lithotripsy), as an option, after that period only.
Conservative treatment means the following :
1. Drink at least 15 glasses fluids daily.
2. Take potassium magnesium citrate syrup/tablets twice daily.
3. Take an alfa-blocker drug like,Alfuzocin once daily at bedtime.
4. Take an anti-spasmodic tablet like serratio-peptidase,chymotripsin twice daily.
5. repeat ultrasound scan of abdomen, after 3-4 weeks.
Continue the medication,so that remaining stones decrease in size and also may flush out. Also continue drinking fluids 3L/day.
Further treatment will need to be reassessed after the next scan report.
Laser surgery has side-effects of injuring the tube, in which stone is lodged.
Wish you a spedy recovery.
