Suggest Treatment For Knee Osteoarthritis

Question: My right knee suddenly got weak yesterday and painful and would periodically get so weak that I could not put any pressure on it. It was not constant though. Going up or down stairs was difficult. Sometimes just walking and it would give out.....seemed to correlate with bending knee a certain amount. Had tough time sleeping last night. This morning when I woke up I could not put any pressure on it hardly and it was definitely swollen and slightly red. I could not straighten my leg out. As I moved around a little it slowly loosened up and I could then walk and only with a slight limp. I took 1 Aleve and it has been better but still swollen and a slight limp. Swelling is on top and left (inside)and right side (outside) of knee. It is most painful on the outside about 1.5 inches down (behind) from bottom of kneecap. I have had a little swelling and stiffness a couple of times in past but not like this. There was nothing that I did yesterday that I am aware of that prompted it.

Detailed Answer:
Hi i am Dr Ahmed Aly
thanks for using HealthcareMagic site ,
I had gone through your question and understand your concerns ..

In my opinion you have knee osteoarthritis , which means inflammation within your knee joints due to erosion of your cartilages that made more friction to your bony eminences and thus pain and inflammation in that joint capsule .
Actually it is common with your age range and increase of weight that causes more pressure and friction at your knee cartilages .X rays may reveal bony spur growth and loss of synovial fluids that help in lubrication of your knee joints.
Pain always appear after minor walking , running with or without stiffness which is correlated with your joint inflammation or effusion , bending , kneeling as you mentioned before increases the inflammation and swelling of your joint knees as mentioned in your given history .
Treatments include Low impact aerobics , glucosamine sulphate tabs , chondroitin sulphate tabs , NSAIDS like tylenol tabs are very helpful in most of cases as they decrease the inflammation . in more severe or chronic cases steroid tabs like oxycodone or even intra articular injections may be prescribed by your physician if you need .
You have to avoid heavy weights , over weighing , vigorous movements , bad sleeping or sitting postures .
Aleve or tylenol tabs after meals , glucosamine and chondroitin tabs increases joint lubrication , hot massages with topical anti-inflammatory gels will be helpful in most of cases .in very severe cases or chronic cases your orthopedic may mention osteotomy ( removal of bony spurs ) or even total knee replacement if required .
I believe in your case minor medications and some physiotherapy will be more than enough . hope you feel better soon .
