Posted on Thu, 18 Aug 2016
Question: I have severe pain on my left side under the rib cage around the speen. My first suspicion was gallbladder but wrong side. Yesterday morning I awoke with a bladder infection, but that has subsided mostly but then this pain started this afternoon, subsided for a bit, then came on like gangbusters. I will add that I am the caretaker for my husband who has dementia and has been very difficult tonight. Stress?

Brief Answer:
Most probably costochondritis or muscle pain.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Read the complete history and understood your concerns.
With the detailed history you have provided my probable diagnosis would be:
Costochondritis on the left side; has stress and anxiety as one of the major causative factors. Please check if there is a tenderness on pressing upon the sore site on left side.
I am worried about what you wrote: the bladder infection.
I would advise you the following:
Please get the urine tested for routine, microscopy, culture and sensitivity and have a complete course of antibiotics if there is an infection.
Take an anti-inflammatory whichever suits you like Ibuprofen or so for the pain to be under control.
Avoid any movements that involve the painful area, like twisting body, lifting something that is heavy,.
Take plenty of water orally.
Hot fomentation for the sore site.
Confirmation if needed of the diagnosis by your Doctor and to get investigations like X-ray chest, ultrasound of abdomen, tests of urine as suggested above and of the blood and stool if required and asked by your Doctor; and to get a valid prescription for the antibiotics and other medication as required.
Since you have so much of a responsibility, it is better to be fit and fine by proper and early diagnosis and proper treatment.
Take care.
I hope this answer helps you, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
