Suggest Treatment For Leg Swelling In An Elderly Person
Question: 100 year old women with swollen legs and clear liquid leaking through skin.
Brief Answer:
Blood flow congestion
Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to HCM.
It may indicate heart failure and congestion of blood flow due to weak cardiac muscle. She should continue taking diuretics (eg. Fursemide) and regulate her blood pressure.
Also, she should apply elastic stockings and avoid salty food. If despite following all these, there is no improvement she should see a cardiologist.
Let me know if there's any further queries.
Wish you good health.
Regards

She has a heart valve problem. but blood flow in feet seems OK. No discoloration and quick return of pink color after pressure released. Legs very swollen between knee and ankles. Clear liquid seeping through skin. No sign of infection. Should we allow it to continue to drain? Or? Will try gentle compression.
Brief Answer:
Allow
Detailed Answer:
Welcome back,
You can apply gentle compression and keep legs elevated..It will still drain after it but may be decreased.
It is important to measure blood pressure few times per day and give her enough fluids to compensate loss. This may be sign of further heart insufficiency and diuretics dosage should be increased as well as cardiac medications like Digoxin should be considered after discussing with her Cardiologist.
