Question: I have what's been diagnosed as stasis dermatitis, with some lesions and much redness around the ankles. Nothing I have been using seems to be doing much good, such as various creams. What can I do for this?

Brief Answer:
Stasis dermatitis is a condition that results usually from chronic venous insufficiency

Detailed Answer:
Hello & thank you for submitting your question.

Stasis dermatitis is a condition that results usually from chronic venous insufficiency with venous hypertension. It is an inflammatory condition that most often presents in the lower extremities. Cellulitis and ulcer formation are complications of chronic stasis dermatitis. Compression of the area is the main mode for preventing additional complications in the setting of stasis dermatitis. Compression stockings are ideal for effective management of edema, but shouldn't be used if there are ulcers present. Compression stockings should be applied early in the morning, before getting out of bed. Elevating the legs and getting physical activity (go for occasional walks, flex leg muscles periodically) are also important in management. If there is ulceration present, this should be addressed with your physician regarding the need for medicated ointment and other adjunct treatment. Your physician should also be able to tell you the exact type of compression stocking that would be ideal in your situation.

Sincerely,
Dr Galamaga
