Suggest Treatment For Lightheadedness And Intermittent Fainting Sensations

default
Posted on Wed, 1 Mar 2017
Question: Thank you. I am researching 'fainting' symptom and causes. My husband (69 yrs old) has been experiencing fainting sensation intermittently over past few days. He is on BP medication. His readings range from 125/86 to 152/68. Doctor has regulated the medications to prevent the diastolic number from dipping too low, causing lightheadedness. Today his resting pulse rate was 59.
Will be making apt with his doctor asap this week. I suspect he has not been drinking enough fluids for starters.

Brief Answer:
Beta blockers could be responsible

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Although low blood volume due to low fluid intake could lead to fainting symptoms, it would rather lead to a rise in the heart rate. In this case since the heart rate is on the lower side I would need to ask you whether he is on any beta blockers. Beta blockers are a type of medicines which are given in chronic heart disease or hypertension. Please confirm about the same. You can mention the list of medicines he is on, if any. Based on that I would guide you further.

Thank you for your response. These are the two blood pressure medications my husband is prescribed and takes daily:

Amlodipine 5 mg
Benicar 20 mg

I don't know whether these are beta blockers. These are the only medications he is taking.

Brief Answer:
None of these are beta blockers

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. No, none of the mentioned medicines are beta blockers. In that case the cause for your husband's low heart rate needs to be explored. An electrocardiogram needs to be done. It will provide valuable clues based on which your cardiologist could guide you further.
