Suggest Treatment For Loss Of Hearing Ability

default
Posted on Tue, 13 Jan 2015
Question: Hi,
I am 22 years old, female. I have lost hearing ability from my left ear since I was 15 years. Though I can hear loud noises and and loud headphone sounds clearly, normal voices and telephonic conversations can't be heard. I hear sometimes whistle kind from my ear.
My treatment has never been continuous since I studied at different places and now work in a different city. But my doctor say that there is no need of any operations, it is curable through medicine.

Please let me know the cure. Should I consult any doctor at work place or any operations are required. And whether it is curable or not.

Brief Answer:
could be otosclerosis, needs investigations.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having hearing loss since 15 years. I would like to ask you few more details.

Do you have any ear pain or ear discharge ?
Was your onset of hearing loss gradual or sudden ?

As per your clinical details, it appears to be oto-sclerosis (common in females, not associated with any ear discharge, progressive loss). After a detailed ENT examination, I would order for otoscopy (status of ear drum- retracted or perforated ), audiometry (to differentiate nerve deafness from conductive deafness, to measure the degree of deafness). If you have already done these tests, kindly upload the reports. They will help me answer your question better.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

I never had ear discharges, but little pain in the beginning. Now I actually don't feel anything except for some sounds.

Brief Answer:
otoscopy/audiometry

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

No ear discharge, ringing sensation with gradual hearing loss suggests Oto-sclerosis or nerve deafness.

I will insist you visit an ENT surgeon and evaluate as discussed above. The treatment options can be determined based on the results.

Hope, I have answered your query.

All the best.
