Suggest Treatment For Lower Leg Swelling And Blisters On Legs

Question: I've had swelling of the lower legs for some time now-about 2 years. Five mos. ago both legs developed blisters about the size of a small peanut. These eventually broke and produced a clear water like fluid that did not smell. I treated these with wet to dry saline bandages for a coupole weeks and they seejmed to be healing fine but now the legs are "weeping" one worse than the other. If I'm sitting watching a ballgame on TV with my feet down I'll be sitting in a puddle of water by the top of the second inning. I keep the legs wrapped with guaze and a large ACE throughout the day. there are very superficial ulcers at the pointws of weeping that are sore. ?? XXXXXXX YYYY@YYYY

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

1. You are reporting to have had swelling of your lower legs for about 2 years. While now you are experiencing superficial ulcers.

If I was your caring doctor, I'd say it is time to get further investigations to find out why you are having swollen legs for such long time? :

- echo doppler of blood vessels in your lower legs to exclude related occlusions (deep vein thrombosis)
- complete blood count
- diabetes testing: as it is commonly associated with difficult to heal wounds
- urine analysis to exclude proteinuria and related kidney problems.

2. I advise to run such testings as soon as possible. Once we identify the right cause and treat it adequately, it will be easier for the ulcers and blisters to heal.

3. For the moment, I advise to:
- keep good local hygiene
- continue soaking treatment

until you see your doctor and run the advised tests.
