Suggest Treatment For Mucositis

Posted on Thu, 15 Dec 2016
Question: I had chemo in 2007. Since then I have had mucositis. I have not found a doctor that knows how to treat it. Since this has been going on for years, it has spread out in my body. I have been very ill at times. Antibiotics have been prescribed from time to time but they do not fix the problem. The problem has slowly become worse as the years go on. I was told early on by a doctor that the symptoms would go away. When the symptoms did not go away, the same doctor did not know how to treat the problem. I have congestion in my head and neck that is hard to get rid of and congestion everywhere else in the trunk of my body except in my lungs and heart. They are unaffected. The trunk of my body-from the top of my head to my groin stays swollen most of the time.

Brief Answer:
Please provide further information

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Madam.

I can certainly understand your concern.

I can guide you better, if you can provide the following additional information.

1.For which malignancy did you receive chemotherapy in 2007?

2.Are you still receiving any sessions of chemotherapy currently?

3.Are you currently experiencing any ulceration in the oral cavity?

Once I receive your answers, I will guide you further.

Thank you

1. Breast segment
2. no
3. yes-I have an open lesion in the roof of my mouth that has never healed. I have lesions on the sides of my mouth and inside my lower lip that are closed until I eat but open while I am eating.
4. I have cloudy mucus with white organisms when I eat. My head, face, neck and upper body around my breasts and shoulder blades are swelled even when I drink anything like hot tea. My sinuses are stopped up as well. I use saline wash and sinus spray but they don't do much good when everything is swelled.
5. My chemo port had tubes that emptied into my back at about the center of my spine. That started to be a trouble spot while I was on chemo and the problem has radiated from there in my opinion.
After I eat lunch the swelling is in my stomach and abdomen and I have infected mucus from my neck and back "shooting" into my mouth for several hours after I eat. I clean my mouth very well after eating and rinse and gargle with Dr Tischenor's Mouthwash but it does not stop the problem.

Brief Answer:
Kaopectate can be helpful

Detailed Answer:
Hello Madam. Sorry for the delay in my response

This is certainly cancer Chemotherapy associated mucositis.

This can be recurrent in nature.

This can treated well with oral rinsing of mouth with a combination of 2% viscous Lidocaine is mixed in equal volumes with diphenhydramine hydrochloride and bismuth subsalicylate (Kaopectate).

Please check with your physician if he shares my view and if can prescribe this KAOPECTATE to you.

Post your further queries if any.
Thank you.
