Suggest Treatment For Muscle Fatigue And Soreness

Posted on Tue, 16 Jun 2015
Question: My wife gets extreme muscle soreness with minor activity (like changing a light bulb). She's seen her endocrinologist, and cardiologist, neurologist. she is currently on synthroid (a couple months) but the symptoms started prior. tsh was at a 51.0 after radioactive iodine in XXXXXXX 3 weeks later it was 7.0. (75mg) I wouldn't expect a diagnosis in this forum but rather a direction to pursue. tests generally are good so we're dealing with a mystery. clearly putting you at a disadvantage for any guidance. klonopin prescribed to help relax tension but she takes it infrequently and usually cuts it in half. we expected her to generally feel bad for awhile as her thyroid balances. but the muscle fatigue and soreness seems atypical. any advice would be appreciated.

Brief Answer:
Myalgias and fatigue are a result of the low thyroid

Thanks for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You wife has recently developed low thyroid and is now on replacement therapy but her thyroid levels are not yet stable. The fatigue and muscle pain are common symptoms of hypothyroidism. It may take up to 3-6 months after starting replacement therapy to actually feel back to normal.

I could recommend using ibuprofen for the muscle pain while she is recovering. Be sure she drinks plenty of fluids and though she may not feel like it she should do a little exercise. If she can do 10-15 minutes that would greatly help her recovery.

Are you suggesting that when she uses a muscle, for a basic, short activity, then experiences extreme muscle soreness and fatigue, that is normal with her condition?

Brief Answer:
Fibromyalgia

Detailed Answer:
If she is having that much pain that would not be normal for hypothyroidism. I am sorry I did not appreciate the severity of her muscle pain. Is she on other medications like a statin for lowering cholesterol? If she is then then the statin could cause muscle pain and I would recommend stopping it immediately.

Could she be experiencing fibromyalgia? which is a condition where nerve ending are hypersensitive to stimuli and cause severe muscle pain with minimal activity. There are no blood tests or biopsies that can diagnose fibromyalgia. Her doctor should perform a good physical to rule out fibromyalgia.

Be sure she drinks plenty of fluids. She should get a goods nights sleep so she can allow her muscles to recover. If she is not sleeping well that may also cause muscle pain.

Perhaps this will help. I wish you and your wife luck in discovering what is ailing her.

After speaking with her endo a couple of days ago, he changed her from synthroid to tirosent. The thinking was that she may be having some reaction to the fillers in synthroid.

She took ambian last night and had her first restful sleep in weeks.

This morning was her 2nd day on tirosent. An hour after taking it she complains of chest pain and her lungs feel irritated. I notice shes coughs frequently.

Is this a typical response to tirosent?

Brief Answer:
Not typical reaction

Detailed Answer:
i am concerned that her reaction to Tirosint is not typical and possibly dangerous. if her chest pressure continues she probably be seen in the ER. she maybe having angina associated with taking her medication
