Suggest Treatment For Nasal Congestion

Posted on Tue, 19 Jan 2016
Question: one of the nostrils (mostly the right one) gets blocked when I sleep. Once I wake up, after sometime or if I go in the open air it opens up. Is this something I should worry about?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Might be nasal structural abnormalities; other causes to be ruled out

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for posting your query in Healthcaremagic.com.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.

I understand your concern.
This is a common problem these days. Many patients complain of stuffy nose during sleep which gets somewhat relieved the next morning.
There are a few causes for this symptoms which might include-
Environmental allergy, deviated nasal septum, nasal polyps etc and also sleep apnoea.
Apart from sleep apnoea, the other causes might not be life threatening but should be clinically checked and ruled out if possible. But sleep apnoea should be ruled out as it may cause problem in future. Also, any chronic allergy should be taken care of. So, I might suggest you the following-
Avoidance of any pollution.
Nasal sprays like xylometazoline for relief from nasal congestion.
Allergy test to rule out chronic allergic conditions.
Consultation with an ENT specialist to rule out nasal structural abnormalities as mentioned.
Deep breathing exercises.

Hope I have answered your question.
If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Regards.
