They want to take out my whole thyroid. Why not just the nodules
Brief Answer:
About thyroidectomy;
Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
It is not possible to remove only the nodules.
The removal of one thyroid lobe is the least surgical removal.
It is recommended in benign nodules.
If there are suspicious for malignancy or to prevent the nodules at the other lobe, total thyroidectomy is preferred.
Best wishes,
Dr.Mirjeta

What are the dangers of this surgery. I am 76. What if I did nothing
Brief Answer:
About thyroid surgery;
Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
The most common side effects of thyroid surgery are; laryngeal nerve damage and a low calcium level ( in most cases is transitory).
Of course, there may be also complications of anestezia depending on other pathologies (if you have cardiac pathologies, diabetes ect).
If left untreated, there may be complications if any of them has malignant origin, of course is the risk of metastasis.
At the other side is important to know if you have symptoms of adjacent structures compression (cough, difficulty in breathing or swallowing), the nodules may increase further and worse the symptoms.
So, your treating physician can explain you in more details (depending on your exact diagnosis) the profits and risks of intervention.
Wish you good health.
Best wishes,
Dr.Mirjeta
