Question: Numness and tingling pain in my second large toe every night in bed. Vasoline and a bandaid seem to help for a while. Hurts to put on any shoes. Sandals (with toe opening) are comfortable. I'm 84.

Brief Answer:
Pressure or COMPRESSION neuropathy

Detailed Answer:
Good evening.

Thank you for your question on this network. Your symptoms of numbness and tingling are referred to as PARESTHESIAS. If placing shoes on your feet cause paresthesias and wearing sandals improves or eliminates the sensation then, you have what's called a PRESSURE or COMPRESSION NEUROPATHY. The terminal nerves in your toes are being squeezed by the shoes cutting off circulation both to the toes as well as to the nerves. Thus the sensations of pain, numbness, and tingling. When the pressure is released, blood flow is normal and the nerves and toes are HAPPY!

You will need to get properly fitted shoes and everything should work out just fine. I would highly recommend a professional to fit your shoes since most people really are not able to size themselves accurately.
