Suggest Treatment For Nystagmus
My daughter had an accident 3.5 years ago and suffered many problems since.
She sustained a brain injury and is now on epilepsy medication and also a 50 point drop in her IQ.
She has shakes and constant fidgeting.
Since the accident she has double vision and loses her balance easily now.
I took her to London to see a neurologist and they diagnosed her with a nystagmus.
I brought her to an opthamologist whom proceeded to say there was nothing wrong with her and she was making it up for attention. He is totally incorrect as I know my daughter and I see what she struggles with on a daily basis.
Is it possible to have monocular and binocular Diplopia at the same time. I have read that it is rare but possible. Id appreciate your opinion
monocular binocular diplopia can be tested separately by covering one eye
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Old injury in accident and mainly brain for which MRI to be taken and neurosurgeon is to be consulted. It is possible to have mono ocular as well as binocular diplopia. To confirm both eyes is to be tested separately. Ataxia indicates she has injury in Pons. Monocular and binocular diplopia can be tested by covering one eye and each eye is tested separately. It is mainly refractive error and very bad astigmatism. There can be vertical diplopia.
It can be poly opsia in which there will be perception of vision in one eye when the other eye is covered. For monocular diplopia the affected eye can be covered so that problem is avoided.
Diagnosis of nystagmus is alright but I do not agree to attention deficit problem since diplopia and nystagmus is very problematic and difficult to bear with. It is to be examined and detected nystagmus type like oscillating pendulum or alternative. Treatment can be different. EEG finding will help in treatment at some point. Gabapentin can be indicated and helpful. It is to be treated by neurologist and refraction can be done by ophthalmologist.
