Question: What do bedbug bites look like? My elderly sister has what look like mosquito bites on her ankle - after a few hours the bites form small open sores. They don't heal very quickly and itch for more than a week.

Hi!

Welcome to health care magic!

I am Dr. Saddiq Ul Abidin. I have read your problem in detail and will try to help you in best way possible.

Based on this history which you have mentioned, it is quite possible to be a bed bug bite. Though other posibilities can't be ruled out.

Since the bite is on exposed area and last for this much days, and the incidence of bite was not exactly known to the patient, all these facts point towards bed bug. As it contains anesthetic and anticoagulant in its saliva, which makes bite painless and healing is delayed.

The treatment is generally indicated, if allergic reaction including difficulty breathing or genralised swelling or rash on body is developed. If not, local wound may heal spontaneously, but for itching she can use anti histamine like citrizine. Also that if signs of infection are seen like puss or iflammatikn around bite, then local antibiotic creams can be applied like bacitricin or polymycin.

Also look for such bugs in or below her bedding or matrice, and clear out any hiding sites in her room for such bugs with good insecticide, and keep the room open and airy for a while not to accumulated fumes of insecticide later on.
