Suggest Treatment For Pain And Swelling In The Right Leg

default
Posted on Wed, 17 May 2017
Question: My right leg is swollen and very painful. I had the knee drained and a shot of cortizone in XXXXXXX and my Ortho says it's too early for another. We are leaving for two months and don't have a doctor in the MD area. The pain keeps me awake all night. The doctor put me on Meloxicam 15 mg at night. Doesn't seem to help.

Brief Answer:
Continue medication, ice blocks, Acetaminophen, limb raising

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for the query,

I do understand how disturbing this could be. I understand the position of your treating physician too. Prescribing many corticosteroid shots during this short interval could lead to even more adverse consequences like abnormal glucose levels, gastric ulcers, Calcium metabolism disorders and a host of other health concerns.

The prescribed dosage of Meloxicam in my opinion is very appropriate. I do think you could associate other measures to your medication and exercise some patience for a couple of days. Ice blocks daily do help some patients. Raising the leg above your body level, like placing it on a pillow as you lie on a flat surface improves venous drainage, and reduce stress on the affected limb. You could add a minimal dose of Acetaminophen (sold over the counter) and take it at night in case of severe pain.

You might exercise some patience for a couple of days and in case the pain continues with the same intensity or aggravates, or you experience extra swelling or redness around the painful area, you might have to consult a doctor for reevaluation.

Thanks and kind regards as I wish you good health. Please, do not hesitate asking further questions in case of need, I would be glad to make my modest contribution to your well being.

Kind regards,

Dr Bain
