Question: My mother has had a hiatal hernia for years but for the last week every time she eats she feels like she is going to throw up and is in a lot of pain. Do we try just changing her diet and life style? She is 90 and very stubborn and she lays down almost all the time.

Brief Answer:
Antacids and pain pills cause delayed emptying of stomach

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I think at this age it is not correct to give antacids and pain killers which generally delay the gastric emptying and cause gastroparesis.

Stop giving them for time being.
Let her lean in a recliner than sleep.
Diet changes required for sure. The most common diet that I suggest for the is low-fat, low-fiber, and low carbohydrate, also advising a gluten free diet.
Use lacto fermented food. I suggest to give a ginger root to suck on. It definitely helps. Chicken bone broth is very good with all needed nutrients for elderly.
Your doctor can prescribe a very low dose erythromycin or Naltrexone which are good prokinetics. However try with diet alone.

Hope this gives you a direction.
