Question: Been ill for about 5 days now . The first day I thought it was heartburn, but heartburn meds only seemed to help for a few hours, the next I thought it was just a lot of gas build up in my system,i also took gas blockers for this and at first it seemed to help but then by the night time the center of my chest was hurting so badly I couldn't hardly think straight. Both the first and second day and night from the first afternoon I had severe nasea and cramping in my stomach that would dull down then become pain in chest and nausea then go back again over and over until my nights were ending with the pain in chest.Next morning I would wake up and within half an hour of waking it would start all over again. On the third day I felt like I may have some kind of food poisioning .I had barley at at all for days and when I did it would cause nausea and cramping, and I was thirsty all the time.On third afternoon I had diareaha which gave some relief and chest pains are gone but this is the fifth day and im still having nausea, eating or even seeing food makes me want to vomit .Oh and I foregot with all this on and off ive had head aches that sometimes are so bad the pain goes all the way to the base of my back, and sometimes I have little or no energy. So what in the heck can be wrong with me?

Brief Answer:
Acute viral gastroenteritis..following advice to ease symptoms...

Detailed Answer:
Hi my dear,

I am sorry for the situation you are going through.

1. Your symptoms of having heartburn, associated with nausea and cramping and diarrhea are indicating you are going through an acute gastroenteritis. The cause in most of cases is a virus.

2. Your other symptoms of having headaches with no energy are also indicating a viral infection going around.

3. If you have had food poisoning, your symptoms wouldn't have persisted for such long time.

4. The symptoms will subside in a few days. I advise to:
- increase fluids intake (especially water, tea, soups, etc.)
- have light meals (yogurt, chicken soups, etc.) until symptoms will subside
- continue taking antacids to relieve heartburn
- avoid foods/drinks that would aggravate heartburn or nausea (oily, chilly, etc.)
- take more rest
- take OTC probiotics to stabilize intestinal flora and
- tasectan or pepto bismol for diarrhea

You'll feel better, but need a few more days until improvement.

5. If no improvement, of if nausea will persist with no diarrhea, should schedule an appointment with your GI doctor to exclude gastritis or gallbladder problems.

6. Or, if no improvement, with nausea and diarrhea persisting, should go to ER for immediate evaluation and iv re-hydration therapy.

Wish fast recovery!
