Question: Hi Doctor:

Something concerns me that I am sure you can clarify my question. I have intermittent chest pain usually confined to the center of my chest around the sternum and upper chest. I do have pvcs which I try and control. I have blood work done, ekg which showed pvcs and echocardiogram which was normal. Blood work all good cholesterol slightly high at 203. Sometimes during the night I feel sharp pain in center of the chest when lying on my side that last only minutes then goes away. I don't feel short of breath. Sometimes I get nausea. I doleft heavy items on my job. I am of small frame body build and thin. These chest pains usually last only minutes. Could this maybe be GERD? Please advise. Thank you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

It might be GERD indeed. Especially if the chest pain is associated with nausea or acidity. Such pain should be related to foods intake, especially if you eat before sleeping. GERD pain however is usually burning like, not sharp.
Sharp pain is usually caused by rib nerve problem. It may be some rib nerve inflammation or spine problems. Rib nerve pain should be more intense when moving the chest and much less intense when not breathing for a while.
I suggest you to perform simple test. Next time when the pain will appear, please drink a glass of mineral water. If you feel a relief for a few seconds, GERD it is.
In a meanwhile please avoid coffee, chocolate, fatty foods, spicy foods, orange juice. Do not eat before sleeping (last meal should be 2 hours before sleeping) and put an additional pillow under your head when sleeping. If this wont help, please consult your doctor.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Detailed Answer:
No, it does not. Heart pain usually gives left chest squeezing or burning pain which radiates to the left arm or jaw. Shortness of breath and sweating are also characteristic for heart pain.
