Posted on Tue, 23 Jun 2015
Question: A few days ago I fell onto a heavy metal fireplace set and hit my chest hard . I still have pain when I move a certain way or breath deeply. Ice does make it feel better. It is worse when I lie down. Should I have an Xray or scan done?

Brief Answer:
Get an X-ray chest done.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your query.

The history of pain in the chest after trauma suggests a muscular pain.
You can take rest for some time, icing, pain killers and muscle relaxants for the pain.
The aggravation of the pain associated with movement and deep breathing suggests that the muscle injured is attached to the rib cage.
Any movement of the rib cage is increasing the pain.
It is advisable to consult your doctor to get an X-ray chest done.
The X-ray will rule out any air collection or fluid collection in the pleural cavity.
An injury to the chest can cause pleural injury and air or fluid collection.
If present, it can be managed appropriately.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care

Thank you. I went to the ED, had an Xray and it was normal. I'm glad I did that to rule out anything more serious.
