Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Buttocks

default
Posted on Thu, 6 Oct 2016
Question: Hello,

I woke up yesterday morning with a slight pain in my right buttock. Since them it has developed into much more pain, and it is a round red bump, which sore of looks like a big pimple. It hurts to press on it, and sit on it and it is warm to the touch. I have no idea how I could have developed something like this unless it is just an infected ingrown hair or something. Any ideas?

Brief Answer:
abscess from causes as you suggest

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your question,
What you describe sounds like an abscess. This can happen to any of us and you are correct about the cause. It happens when a hair follicle, oil gland or other skin structure gets blocked off and infected. The body tries to protect us from the infection spreading by walling it off and forming a cyst.
Unfortunately the only way to get rid of a cyst is to have it drained.
Occasionally they will drain on their own, but usually you need to see a doctor who can drain the abscess under sterile conditions.
Do not squeeze this since that could force bacteria into your bloodstream. You could try warm soaks and see if it would drain on its own but it is probably best to see a doctor right away. The draining gets more complicated the larger the abscess becomes.

Dr. Robinson
