Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Mid Abdomen And Groin Area Indicate

Posted on Mon, 18 May 2015
Question: For several weeks, if I lay on my left side eventually I get a burning lineal pain about mid abdomen to jus above the groin area. Happens mostly at night. Recent medical problems have included a severe reaction to statins which started at my knees and proceed to just about every joint and muscle. This was about 4 -5 weeks ago. Still having some pain in knees. A kidney infection about 6 or 7 weeks ago and a prior one last fall.
What I think may have been 2 TIA's. One affecting dizziness, while sitting down, lasted about 1+ min. The first one affecting vision. Went into a store and everything was a dark grey. Couldn't make out anything. Also lasted about 1+ minute. I am 65 years with a history of autoimmune problems.

Brief Answer:
Requires investigation

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
Since your pain occurs on lying down on the left side, it's possible that it is a neuritic pain from the spine. Your TIAs also require to be looked into. It may be a warning sign and you are at risk of a stroke. I think you should see a doctor preferably a neurologist and have yourself examined and investigated. If you have diabetes , Hypertension or cholesterol abnormalities, the risk is even more.
It would be a good idea to take a baby aspirin a day if you don't have abdominal pain or asthma, till you are able to see a doctor.

Do you have any other explanations for the left side pain? I was thinking that it might have something to do with the ureters. I have had 2 back surgeries and know what nerve pain feels like. I have experienced pain in my lower back and extremities for 30 years. Never a burning sensation like this..
Also, can they tell if you have experienced a TIA? I just called them that because they seemed to follow what I have been told about TIA's.

Brief Answer:
Not typical of Ureteric pain

Detailed Answer:
The pain arising from the kidney for example due to a stone, isn't related to posture. The nature of the pain depends on the type of nerve fibers that are pinched. C fiber pain is burning. Ureteric colic is a spasmodic pain and radiates from loin to groin.
Your description of transient neurological symptoms is typical of TIA. Congratulations if the diagnosis is self made.

Thank you so much. I will follow up with the TIA's. One more small question. What are c-fibers?

Brief Answer:
Welcome

Detailed Answer:
The nerves in the body consist of different types of fibers A. B and C having different functions.
C fibers conduct slow pain which may be felt as a dull ache or burning and not like a sharp pain which is quickly felt.
