Question: My outer thighs hurt some all the time and are tender to the touch. Sometimes they hurt even more. When they hurt more you can feel bumps and strings if you rub your fingers up and down my outer thighs. When they hurt less the bumps are less pronounced. They are very tender to pressure.

Brief Answer:
Features suggestive of inflammation the muscles.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,
Thanks for posting your query on HCM.

I really appreciate your concern towards the painful thigh muscles.
For immediate relief of pain NSAID pain killers are effective and hence advised.
If pain continues to occur you may need a shorter course of corticosteroids for the relief of pain (for that you may have to visit a doctor).

If you were my patient, I would have advised you the following investigations to confirm the diagnosis:

CBC, ESR, C reactive protein, Rheumatoid factor, Auto antibodies, EMG study of the affected muscles (in the thigh), Serum Creatine kinase level (which are raised in myositis).

Hope my suggestions could be useful to you in getting the problem diagnosed and treated accordingly.

Do ask again if you have any query.
Wishing you best of your health.
