Question: Hi I have had a 4mm kidney stone ( for over 2 months) and went in to have it surgically removed yesterday. Before surgery I had a ct scan (without dye) which showed the stone had passed , so no longer needed the surgery. For the last 6 weeks I have had pain and burning in my bladder but no infections have showed up on my urine tests.I still have a lot pain in my bladder even though the stone has apparently passed. Is this normal? The surgeon said I could have bruising in my bladder.

Brief Answer:
Stones can cause bruising of lower urinary tract during passage through it

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. I see many patients like you regularly, whose who have a kidney stone in one scan and later complain of pain in pelvis and burning urination, following which there is no stone found in subsequent scans.

2. The stone has surely passed out and during its passage, it probably caused abrasions in the lower urinary tract. It will help to know if you had a sudden sharp pain on a particular day and if there was dark urine passed during that time. This confirms passage of a stone. However if the CT scan shows no stone then it has passed out.

3. Your surgeon is right and probably the stone had sharp edges which caused bruising of the bladder and lower urinary tract.

Hope your query is answered.
