Suggest Treatment For Painful Swelling In The Lower Abdomen

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Aug 2017
Question: My Mom has been sick with the flu after a UTI. She only has one kidney and tonight has severe abdominal pain. Looking at the symptoms for kidney failure, I think that is a possibility. She said her lower abdominal area is swollen and very painful. She is going to take her BP and then go to the hospital.

Brief Answer:
Unlikely that she has an acute kidney failure without warning symptoms!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this pain that your mother has. This might be related to a poorly treated kidney infection, a kidney stone or possible coming from other structures in the abdomen. It is unlikely that this is a renal failure. Kidney failure presents with decreased urine output, increased body weight, swelling of lower limbs, etc. Your mother doesn’t seem to have any of these. While it is certainly necessary to show up for comprehensive evaluation, kidney failure is not the cause at this time.

I hope this guides and helps. I wish you well. I wish your mother well, too. Feel free to follow up with me of need be for more information and clarifications.
