Question: does this look like palmar erythema to you? I was recently diagnosed with Fatty liver so I have been a little stressed and researching every symptom of liver disease etc. my hand looks splotchy but not sure if they always looked like this. the pictures online seem to show palmar erythema being more on a real exaggerated red color and not like the photo I provided.

Brief Answer:
No its not palmar erythema.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,
Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query.
I've gone through your attachements
I am a Gastroenterologist and would be addressing your concerns.
Firstly its not palmar erythema.Secondly these changes appear in high grade of liver problems.
Fatty liver has many grades-
When the echogenicity is just increased, it is grade I-Very common in young adults.Usually no symptoms are there.Life style changes are advocated..

when the echogenic liver obscures the echogenic walls of portal vein branches, it is grade II-Again patient is clinically normal apart from life style modification some potent liver rejenuvators are advocated.

when the echogenic liver obscures the diaphragmatic outline, it is grade III fatty infiltration. This is the phase when most symptoms like palmar erthema tremors edema etc appears.

Though you have not mentioned your grade yet i think you are either in grade 1 or 2.
So unless you have any symptom you can lead a normal life.

Though not asked yet some life style changes are-
-Whole grains are very beneficial to consume. These can be in the form of XXXXXXX whole wheat bread or cereal, brown rice, whole grain pasta, grains such as whole oats, wild rice, rye, oatmeal and corn are also beneficial and can be taken if suits your fooding pattern.
-Fruits and vegetables should be a significant part of any diet to help in recovering from a liver disease. They are full of essential nutrients and are easy to digest. When on recovery diet follow a high carbohydrate diet,Fat contents of diet should be very low. However Olive oil, canola oil and flaxseed oil are all healthy fats that are recommended.
-Healthy proteins in the form of low-fat milk and dairy products along with lean meats, beans, eggs and soy products can also be a part of a healthy liver diet.
-Take a liver rejunvator like Sylimarin (Milk of thistle) in your regimen daily.

Now lets move on to
Foods to Avoid
-Processed food items
-Hydrogenated oils
-Avoid alcohol and smoking.

thanks for the quick response. I am not sure what grade I am in as I never had a biopsy. my last ultrasound 6 months ago showed a normal size liver and the fat was gone. I has a fibroscan done also and it showed a 4.8kph so I am assuming that I reversed it. is it possible to permentaly get rid off. I had high triglycerides and ldl cholestrol which crestor reversed. it seems like the statin cured the fatty liver. is that possible?

Brief Answer:
you are absolutely fine now.

Detailed Answer:
Hey there,
As already told earlier mild fatty liver is not a disease its just a aeging process and is fully reversible bh diet control and medications.
Fats are basically lipids and all lipid lowering drugs cause fat to move from liver to periphery forvutilisation hence yes drugs have a role in it.

Follow the diet i advice and you would be off drugs bery soon.

Apart from run for 20 minutes a day.
Join gym for 4 days a week and do moderate exercises.
Eat only Olive oil or rice XXXXXXX oil.
Drink plenty of water.

All your tests and scans are normal.

How to get rid permanently-

1) Life style changes
2)Proper food
3) Exercise

And you will stay fine.

Thanks.

is moderate alcohol consumption on a few occasions okay if the fatty liver is gone? or will I have to abstain forever.

Brief Answer:
follow up

Detailed Answer:
Hey,

The recommended safe intake for men is no more than three units of alcohol a day, or 21 units per week. Units of alcohol should not be confused with number of drinks, as many common drinks count as more than one unit but as you already had fatty liver disease make it half

One unit of alcohol is the equivalent to:

Half a pint of beer containing (3-4 percent alcohol by volume)
A small measure of spirit containing (40 percent alcohol by volume)
One and a half units of alcohol is equivalent to:

A small glass of wine (12 percent alcohol by volume)
a standard, single shot-sized measure of spirits (40 percent alcohol by volume).

Consuming moderate amount occassionly wont cause any problem.
complete abstaince is the best however if you follow as advised above you would be safe.

thanks. last question. how accurate is a fibroscan. would a score as low as a 4.8 rule out any left over fibrosis or scarring?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Ramesh Kumar (46 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
follow up.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,

It's a very accurate test with sensitivity as high as 85%.
This score virtually rules out the possibility of scarring or fibrosis.
You seem to fine.
Follow a healthy diet and lifestyle.

However best suggestion can only be given after comparing your previous ultrasonogram with the latest one.

Thanks!
