Suggest Treatment For Pancreatitis

Posted on Mon, 10 Nov 2014
Question: I believe I have pancreatitis due to my symptoms. I have confirmed gall stones which are known to cause pancreatitis. The pain is in the upper left abdomen area and shoots to my back after eating. If I don't eat the pain seems to go away after a bit. The pain is very severe when it happens. Is this an emergency situation or should I wait to see my doctor in a few days?

Brief Answer:
This is suggestive of gallstones, not pancreatitis!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

Your symptoms and previous findings are suggestive of gall stones. After eating, active substances are secreted which increase the contraction of the smooth muscles in the bile ducts to release bile for digestion. Because the passage is blocked, the contraction causes pain. When you stay without eating, in a way you are avoiding to stimulate the muscle contractions. Pain associated with pancreatitis is more constant than intermittent.

There is no need to go to the hospital now as you have an upcoming appointment in a few days. Talk to your doctor about these and if the pains are pretty severe, he may consider taking the stone/and or gall bladder out.

I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Just to confirm, the pain started with the gall bladder on the right side. The pain on the left side is new and radiates to the back. When the pain comes on it is very sudden and severe.

Brief Answer:
More suggestive of gall stones!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for following up with me.

From the information that you have provided, intermittent spasmodic pain is typical of gallstones. Lie I mentioned before, that of the pancreas is dull and constant.

I hope this further clarifies your worries. I wish you well.
