Suggest Treatment For Persistent Chills, Body Pain And Fever

Question: About 3 weeks ago, I went to the doctor with a fever (102), body aches, chills, and swollen lymph nodes, especially on the right. The day before I had an upset stomach and diarrhea. They did a spot test for strep, and also tested for the flu, but both were negative. They figured I had a strange virus and gave me antibiotics to start taking if my symptoms got worse. I ended up with vomiting too, so I ended up taking the medicine. I had a fever that wouldn't come down for 2 days, but then finally broke. The day after that, the swelling in my lymph node went down. Now, 3 weeks later, I am battling the same swollen lymph node, body aches, and very low grade fever. Any ideas?

Brief Answer:
Return to prescribing doctor for stronger antibiotics

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

Do you have a cough? Is there mucus production?
Is there sinus congestion?
Do you have a sore throat?
Are your symptoms worse in the morning or at night?
Do you have a headache?
Do you have your ear or eye pain?
Do you think your symptoms are worse in your head or in your chest?

Three weeks is a long time to be sick with these symptoms. However, it is not uncommon to have a viral infection that goes on for 3 to 4 weeks. It may be possible that you have a different viral infection then you had before. Unfortunately, it is that time of the year that people are spreading viral infections.

The alternative would be that you have a bacterial infection that never cleared with amoxicillin. You may want to return to your prescribing doctor to get a stronger antibiotic. It is not unheard of for bacterial infections to last up to three weeks.

I would recommend taking Tylenol for your body aches and fevers, gargling salt water for your swollen lip node, and increasing your fluid intake.

I would also recommend getting blood work done to rule out any metabolic, electrolyte, or endocrine diseases.

Ultimately, I would return to your prescribing doctor to get a stronger antibiotic as is common for bacterial infections to last up to 3 to 4 weeks without improvement in symptoms.

I do not have any cough, congestion, or any other symptoms. I have been back to normal for the last 2 weeks, but these original symptoms from 3 weeks ago have just returned.

Brief Answer:
Return to prescribing doctors office

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

I think this is completely coincidental that you got sick and that you had the same symptoms as before. I suspect that you have a different viral infection then you did before because, unfortunately, this is the time of the year to spread viral infections.

I would recommend increasing your fluid intake, taking Tylenol for fever's and bodyaches, and returning to your prescribing doctor to get another course of stronger antibiotics just to make sure that this is not a bacterial infection that has been lingering since it started. Fevers of greater than 100.5 always warrant further investigation and should be treated appropriately. In addition, you may want to have a flu swab done again.

I would also recommend getting routine bloodwork if you have not done that for a while.
