Question: Was sick last week, now the lingering cough mixed with shortness of breath won't go away... How can I get rid of these annoying things?

By your history and description, possibility of post infectious bronchitis is more.
You are mostly having viral upper respiratory tract infection which is now working complicated by bronchitis and causing you cough with breathlessness.
So better to consult pulmonologist and get done clinical examination of respiratory system and PFT (Pulmonary Function Test).
PFT will also tell you about severity of the disease and treatment of bronchitis is based on severity only.
You may need inhaled bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS).
