Suggest Treatment For Persistent Cough

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Jul 2015
Question: I had a cold over a month ago that started in my sinuses and progressed to my chest where it stayed. The productive cough was really quite bad for just over two weeks. My issue is the productive cough is still hanging around and it has been over a month. I have never had this happen before. I didn't go and visit the doctor or nurse as there is a shortage in my area.

Brief Answer:
Lower Respiratory tract infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Based upon your description, it appears to be lower respiratory tract infection. If its a bacterial infection then antibiotics would be required. Levofloxacin or clarithromycin can be prescribed in consultation with a doctor. Based on clinical examination and auscultation of the chest other abnormalities e.g asthma , lobar pneumonia etc should also be looked for. A chest x ray , CBC, ESR, Pulmonary function tests can be advised in consultation with a doctor. You would require a doctor to examine you as home remedies, cold medications may not give you adequate relief and proper treatment.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
