Suggest Treatment For Persistent Diarrhea In A 9 Year Old
Question: My 9-year-old son started having diarrhea for 2 days. He also felt tired and a bit weak. No other symptoms were present.
The diarrhea then stopped on day 3. However, he developed other symptoms. He experienced a back ache and a fever started - reaching 101. Motrin was given at that time.
Day 4 the fever went down, and left, and he felt better..
Day 5 (Today) the fever returned, and reached 102, a dry hacky little cough is present on and off (it is not a continuous cough). He felt a bit weak when the fever spiked at 102, but was given Tylenol approximately 3 hour ago, and then he felt better. Although his appetite is a bit decreased, he did eat 3 meals today, but smaller portions than usual. However; I am not restricting his diet. I have kept him quiet, but he seems to feel fine. He played video games, watched T.V. and read. Currently, his fever is 99 (which for him is a fever - he usually runs about 98.0). The Tylenol appears to be working. Right at this moment, he feels good, other than an on again off again occasional hacky little dry cough.
Any thoughts?
Sincerely,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Will settle soon, continue tylenol
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
Diarrhoea, cold and cough is usually due to viral infection.
It may last even upto 5 days.
Dont worry, you doing fine .
Continue tylenol if fever is above 100. No need to treat fever below that.
You mentioned your child is playing games and taking liquids and probiotics.
Ensure he drinks liquids frequently and passes urine atleast 6 times in a day.
This would ensure his body is kept hydrated.
Continue what you are doing now. He is already on the road to recovery.
If cough persists or fever recurs over next 2 days, rule out throat or chest infection ( visit to your pediatrician will be needed).
Wishing him speedy recovery
