Question: I have a bump behind my right ear that I have had for about 10 years. It doesn't seem to be that much bigger just a little maybe. Its not tender but I do have ear pains and headaches a couple times a week that resolve within a hour usually. the bump is from about my hairline down to where my earlobe starts so thinks its my mastoid bone. I feel like I have a lot of ear wax then most other people but I'm not really sure what is normal. what can this bump be I asked my doctor 10 years ago and they told me it was just a calcium build up and not to worry about it. I have had recent labs and my WBC was slightly elevated but doctor said it could be just my all year round allergies I have. The bump is not red or warm to the touch. Any thoughts? thanks and have a great day

Brief Answer:
It can be a bony swelling

Detailed Answer:
Hello

If the bump has been there for 10 years and is not warm or red, then there is nothing to worry about. It is likely to be a bony swelling from the mastod bone or calcification of a tendon. Both of these conditions are harmless and need no treatment.

The swelling is unlikely to cause wax build up and is unlikely to raise your blood counts, so please dont worry.

If the swelling increases in size or there is pain, then a surgical excision may be required, otherwise you can leave it as it is.
