Question : My son has had a low grade fever between 99.4-102 for 9 days. Sporadic diarrhea and now a horrible, phlegm filled cough (yellow in color) which disables his breathing when he has cough fits. He doesn't feel like eating as he usually does. He coughs in his sleep and during the day. We have albuterol and pulmicort which we give him treatments when the cough fits become unbearable. Is this pneumonia or a bad virus?

Brief Answer:
A good physical examination advised to rule out viral pneumonia....

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am sorry for the situation your son is going through.

His symptoms of low grade fever with sporadic diarrhea and congestion with phlegm are indicating bad viral infection with GI and upper respiratory tract symptoms.

As this has been going on for 9 days now, a good physical examination (auscultation of his lungs) is recommended to rule out pneumonia.

For the moment, I advise to keep giving to him the meds as you are doing now. Remember to encourage him to drink more fluids: water, tea, juice.
Take tasectan and probiotics for diarrhea.

Wish fast recovery!
