Suggest Treatment For Petechiae All Over Body
Question: Hi there. My 1 year old son has petehiae that are covering his entire body. Primarily on his face but they are on his torso, extremities, and buttock. There are thousands of them and they are TINY! They all stared out at reddish pink and most have turned a brownish color but are not fading away. His does have some new ones that are appearing that are the red color as well. He had a CBC 2 weeks ago and all levels were normal. ER pediatric doctor said it was likely a virus and they petechia would disappear in a few days. 2 weeks later they're not going away so my pediatrician ordered a STAT CBC w/ diff. These results also came back completely normal. My son shows no other symptoms. No fever, no loss of appetitive.... Nothing abnormal. The petehiae are prevalent and noticeable. I'm concerned but doctors don't seem to be due to the normal lab values. Where do I go from here? Why aren't these petehiae going away? Please help!
Brief Answer:
You should consult dermatologist.
Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
Your don has petechia. It is common in viral infection but it is due to low platelet count. If your complete blood count is normal then there is no haematological cause. He must have skin disease. So he should consult a skin specialist and go for examination. Then he should start treatment accordingly.
Hope I have answered your question, if you have doubt then I will be happy to answer. Thanks for using health care magic. Wish you a very good health.

What types of skin diseases can cause petechiae? I thought petechiae was always a result of low platelets. He is still covered in the tiny pin prick sized brown dots.
Brief Answer:
Main cause are due to sepsis or low platelets.
Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
Main causes are trauma, sepsis, viral infection and low platelets. But as you say your complete blood count is normal so chances of other rare causes are there. Protein energy malnutrition, kawasaki disease, lupus, sjogren syndroms etc can leads to petechiae. You should consult dermatologist and confirm first that it is petechiae or other things. then you should search the cause accordingly.

My son does have a very poor diet. He is a poor eater and is currently in speech therapy for it. He does not eat any meat and very little veggies. Could the protein energy malnutrition you mentioned be something he could have thats causing the petechiae? He is thriving and is a healthy weight although his diet has not improved much. Any thoughts? All i can find on the protein energy malnutrition is referring to kids in 3rd world countries that are starving.... Does this effect healthy kids as well?
Brief Answer:
If his weight is ok then mostly its not the cause.

Okay. I understand. If you really feel that 2 nCBC reports with all normal results indicates that it is not leukemia then i will relax a bit more.

I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
Your complete blood count report are almost normal so nothing to worry about leukemia. Don't worry at all. Just be relaxed. Chances of bacterial infection is also unlikely. So either it can be some viral infection or some skin conditions.
