Suggest Treatment For Pilonidal Abscess On Tailbone
Question: I had a pilonidal abscess on my tailbone drained yesterday. They said that the incision made wasn't large enough to warrent packing so they just dressed it up. Changing the bandage today I noticed that it wasn't draining and that it had healed up. Do I let the antibiotics take care of the leftover infection or go back to get it drained?
Brief Answer:
That is not good treatment!
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this query.
Please, return and get it drained. Treatment of this abscess requires that it is opened and allowed to heal from inside out. What you have notice if not true healing but closing and allowing the infection to progress within. I will suggest you ask them directly about the incision not being big enough to allow for this. Antibiotics are not the main stay of treatment. What matters most is the surgical incision and drainage.
I hope this helps. I wish you well. Keep me updated.

Should I specifically ask for it to be packed with the gauze tape?
Brief Answer:
Yes, early closing is a bad sign!
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Ask them specifically about the incision healing by granulation from inside out and the necessity to keep it open as long as required so that it heals fully. There is no rush in this and exercise patience for best management.
