Question: My 83 year aunt devoloped pneumonia overnight without being sick prior to getting weak and going to er. I am worried that it is a potential sign of congestive heart failure. Is there a connection to maybe begining stages of chf and pneumonia. She was not coughing and did not have a cold. Her feet and ankles do swell enough to make her shoes tight.

Brief Answer:
Yes, it is quite possible that she is having CHF.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Yes, it is quite possible that she is having CHF.
CHF causes pulmonary edema and this look like pneumonia on chest x ray. This is the only connection otherwise treatment is entirely different.
Swollen legs and acute nature of illness are more suggestive of CHF.
So get done ecg and 2d echo to rule out CHF.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your aunt. Thanks.
