Suggest Treatment For Poor Vision

Question: I underwent lasik surgery 5 weeks ago and my vision is still not clear. My rx used to be -3.50 (1.25- cylindrical and 2.25- spherical) in right eye and -2.50 (1.25- cylindrical and 1.25- spherical) in left eye. After surgery, it is -1.25 (1.00 -cylindrical and 0.25 spherical) in right eye and -0.5 (cylindrical) in left eye. My doctor said that he again operated me after 3-4 weeks . It really upsets me as it seems I have no choice other than that. I would appreciate your insight on this. I hope to hear from you soon.

I am Dr. Dadapeer K, an ophthalmologist and I will be answering your question.

I reviewed your history. It seems from the history that you are have undergone Lasik surgery for correction of myopia with astigmatism following which you had under correction with residual power of 0.25 spherical and 1.0 cylindrical in right eye and 0.5 cylindrical in left eye.

This is one of the common problem which occurs in the post operative period of LASIK. This is more often seen in corneas of people which heal faster.
However this can be corrected by a repeat lasik called as Enhancement lasik. Ideally this has to be done within 3 months. Since it is done within 4 weeks no problem will occur.
I can understand that this problem would have hurt you but since it is managed by enhancement surgery your vision will improve and no problem will occur.

Thanks for your kind reply Dr. Dadapeer. I want to know that what will happen if it will not corrected by a repeat lasik. Is enhancement lasik surgery will be 100% successful. Also, I want to know that is it possible to correct that cylindrical number ?

Enhancement Lasik has got good surgical outcomes. It has got success rates of almost 98%.
Hence I advice you not to worry I hope it will correct your residual refractive error.
Yes it is possible to correct cylindrical power also.

Follow up: Dr. Dadapeer K (9 hours later)

Thankyou Dr. for your reply. I want to know that in my left eye residual error is -0.5 (cylindrical). He said it is a negligible number, no one can go for enhancement lasik for this and for now he will treat only my right eye (may be after 4-5 weeks). Should I wait for some more weeks?

Thank you for the follow up question.

Since the residual power is more in right eye enhancement Lasik is required in this eye. As results are good if done early I do not find any benefit by waiting for the enhancement lasik procedure in right eye, hence I advice you to go ahead with enhancement lasik in right eye as per the advice of your treating doctor.

For left eye you can wait for few more weeks.
