Brief Answer:
Very little available that is not prescription

Detailed Answer:
Good evening.....rather good "morning" where I'm at.....

My name is Dr. Dariush Saghafi and I am a neurologist and a subspecialist in headache and facial pain. I have been the Director of the Headache Clinic at the XXXXXXX Stokes, XXXXXXX VA Medical Center. I deal with veterans who have severe post concussive headaches as well as cognitive difficulties following blast injuries on a day to day basis.

There are 3 natural agents which have had some degree of scientific literature backing them up in the treatment of migraine types of headaches which have shown consistent efficacy in a variety of patients. The first can be used to treat the ACUTE PHASE of a mild to moderate severity migraine if mixed together with ginger extract while all 3 used alone have been found most useful for the PROPHYLAXIS (prevention) of such headaches.

They are:

1. Feverfew
2. Butterbur
3. Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)

There is a cautionary note on #2 in the list and that is anybody with liver disease or dysfunction of any sort should not use the agent if the butterbur they are using is of the raw extract type.

Personally, I recommend to ALL my patients that they simply take no chances with the raw extract and avoid using it completely.

When it comes to natural or complementary agents for cognitive function what I would recommend is that you AVOID is Gingko Biloba. There is no good, reliable, consistent evidence that this herb enhances or helps with short term memory or any other aspect of cognition. In fact, it is known to lower thresh hold in predisposed individuals and can even unmask convulsive tendencies.

However, what is written to be considered BRAINFOOD would be things such as:

1. Blueberries
2. Wild Salmon
3. Nuts/seeds
4. avocados
