Posted on Mon, 19 Jun 2017
Question: Hi, I am a 76 years old. I got shingless 5 weeks ago. The doctor gave me Aciclovir ( 5 doses of 2 each one for ten days). Since the first one I went under that and by night I got nightmares, double vision, panic attacks, ansiety, and I couldn's sleep. The same thing happened on 2nd, 3rd, 4th and fifth day and night. On day 6 I decided to stop that medication. I start taking supplements like Vitamins A, C, B12, D and Lysine.
Later they gave Dermatrol HZ and I've taken this for 9 days.
By now, I don't know what to do. Do I need some evaluation about Shingless, I'm taking Advil for a pain, sometimes it's really bad pain.

Brief Answer:
Post herpetic neuralgia management

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic

Since you have been seen and treated by a physician, you do not need further evaluation for shingles at this point.

The pain you are experiencing is a complication of shingles, caused by nerve damage called post herpetic neuralgia.
This pain goes away without treatment in some people, but most individuals need treatment and may take months for pain to subside.
Post herpetic neuralgia is treated with Gabapentin (Neurontin). You can apply cold compress on affected area and use creams containing aluminium acetate (like tricalm) which can relieve the burning sensation.
Continue Tylenol for pain. If tylenol do not seem to helping, stronger pain killer like Tramadol can be used.

Please be advised to follow up with your treating physician for appropriate management.

I would also like to add that shingles vaccine is recommended for peopleover 60 years whether or not you have had shingles before.Follow up with your physician or pharmacist for shingles vaccine to prevent future attacks.

Hope this answers your question
