Suggest Treatment For Post Nasal Drip Along With Cough
Question: my son is suffering from post nasal drip related cough which increases in the night. He is 10 yrs old and have this problem every winter.
Brief Answer:
Antiallergic + steam inhalation needed
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for posting on HealthCareMagic. Your child probably gets a viral infection. When the temperature drops as in the winter, our immunity also shows a dip and we tend to catch cold. Generally such infections have an allergic component associated which is responsible for the post nasal drip. Giving some antiallergic like levocetirizine tablet 5mg once a day for a few days should give him relief. Also give him steam inhalation twice or thrice daily. Water in the form of vapour will reach inside and help in diluting the cough and will give him relief.

but this condition persist for entire winter and he does not take tablets.
Brief Answer:
Syrup Ascoril LS can be given
Detailed Answer:
I understand your concern.
Antiallergics are essential and if you wish not to give tablets, syrup would be fine. However steam needs to be given. You may also give levolin inhalers through spacer device like Huf-Puf in case wheezing is present. Since the temperature is down in winter, the infection persists or keeps recurring. You will have to keep him warm to avoid such complications.

Should not it progress if it is a viral infection. Because in his case only symptoms are coughs which became more severe in the night
Brief Answer:
Viral infection likely
Detailed Answer:
As you have rightly pointed out, the symptoms generally aggravate at night and in the winter. It is likely to be a viral infection and can be non progressive. These infections generally have a component of bronchospasm (asthmatic component) for which I suggested levolin inhaler through spacer device like Huf-Puf in case of wheezing. Steam inhalation is also essential for the dry cough. Please do not worry. Most children outgrow it as they grow older.
