Brief Answer:
Treatment options for herpes associated neuralgia

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I am dr. kakkar (dermatologist). I have gone through your query and I have noted your concern.

Herpes associated pain is neuralgic/ neuropathic in origin and in elderly individuals it may last for weeks or even months after the skin lesions have healed.

Common treatment options include ;-
-Oral anti-inflammatory/ pain killers/ NSAIDs like Ibuprofen and Diclofenac etc;
-Tricyclic antidepressants like Amytriptyline, Nortriptyline;
-Carbamazepine, an anticonvulsant;
-Gabapentin and pregabalin

Topically, application of capsaicin ointment is of benefit in relieving pain and discomfort on account of it being a counter-irritant and acting by inhibition of release of substance P and interfering with pain signalling.
