Suggest Treatment For Psoriasis And Psoriatic Arthritis
Question: My husband has psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. He takes methotrexate, which has been effective. His PCP and our pharmacist have told him he needs to be off the methotrexate for a period of time, if he wants to receive the shingles vaccination. His rheumatolagist disagrees. Any information would be helpful.
Brief Answer:
Live vaccines should be avoided while on methotrexate
Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you.
I am Dr kakkar (Dermatologist and Venereologist). I have noted your concern.
Shingles vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine. So anybody with a weakened immune system or on immunosuppressives is at risk of developing disseminated disease with the live virus. Since methotrexate is an immunosuppressive so he should not receive this vaccine while on methotrexate.
