Suggest Treatment For Pulsating Sensation On The Muscles

default
Posted on Thu, 2 Jul 2015
Question: I have been diagnosed with "weak muscles" and "jumpy knees". I can be very unstable. I sometimes just collapse and can not get my thighs to work for several minutes. There is nothing wrong with my MRI, cat scan, or blood work. Now the doctor wants me to have a test on the electric pulses in my leg muscles. Why? will this test lead to a treatment?

Brief Answer:
detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query.

Your doctor want to do a test called Electromyography (EMG).This is a procedure done to evaluate the muscle function.
The symptoms you are having of muscle weakness ,can be related with two major causes:
-A neurological condition which affect the nerves that control the muscle movement. In this case a CT/MRI scan of head and spine ,would detect abnormalities.
-A muscular disorder. In this case the nerves are intact and the problem is the muscle itself.

In your case investigations like MRI ,CT scan are normal and this excludes major neurological causes. The next step is to evaluate the condition of the muscles and peripheral nerves .The neurologist will place surface electrodes at various locations on your skin depending on the area you are having symptoms. The electrodes will transmit an electrical impulse and the muscle activity (contractions ) is evaluated.

It is important to do the test ,in order to sort out the right cause of your symptoms and the treatment will depend on the cause.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any question.

Kind regards,
Dr.Rovena Murati
