Suggest Treatment For Recurrent UTI

Question: I have had reoccuring UTI's for about 6 - 8 months. I have been prescribed antibiotics of different kinds over this time. Recently referred to Urologist. Have had CAT scan. Showed no obvious cause. Also had ultrasound and nothing detected. My urologist is not available to speak with at this time. Have a cystoscopy booked for next week and am unable to speak with my doctor beforehand. I am concerned that as nothing was obvious in my scans, that perhaps it is likely that there is cancer present. If so would this have been evident in my CAT scan ? I have no bleeding, no pain and no irritation. Just seem to have infection after infection. Some urine samples tested show ecoli bacteria. Others show cause as contamination and not a true UTI. Would you please advise re liklihood of cancer. Could benign polyps be a cause of these continuious infections. Thank you for your assistance.

Hello,

Thanks for your query, I have gone through your query and the CT scan reports.

Based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you are getting repeated episodes of UTI since couple of years.

In elderly females, after menopause there is generalized atrophy of all the genital organs which also involves urethra that results in narrowing of urethral passage called as Urethral Stenosis.

This stenosis causes incomplete emptying of bladder causing substantial amount of urine to remain in bladder (Residual Urine). This stagnated residual urine is the source of infection giving rise to recurrent UTI.

As regards your doubt about cancer of the bladder, I would like to state that painless gross hematuria is the presenting symptom of cancer of the bladder. Since your CT scan is absolutely normal you need not worry at all.

As you have planned for Cystoscopy your Urologist will do Urethral Calibration to widen the urethra. This will help you to empty your bladder completely and there by prevent getting recurrent UTI.

You will have to do self catheterization daily for couple of months to get permanent cure..
