Suggest Treatment For Recurrent UTI

Posted on Tue, 12 May 2015
Question: A couple of months ago I had some kind of Bladder Infection: sweating, dizzy, couldn't hardly urinate, no bowel movement. I went to the VA Clinic who tested my urine, they prescribed some kind of anti-biotic and I got better but they did say my urine readings were all over the place. Two weeks later I had the VA test my urine again and they said I was clean without any UTI. I now have very strong smelling urine noticeable while I'm peeing. Color of urine is rather dark yellow. I'm 63 year old male with arthritis in a number of areas. They did say the cranberry juice helps prevent UTI, I did drink this for awhile but now have cut back on the amount I drink cranberry juice.

Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have repeated episodes of UTI .

I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on your problem
1) Do you have any urinary voiding symptoms like increased frequency, poor stream, urgency ,nocturnal frequency (Nocturia) etc ?
2) Are you diabetic?

Repeated episodes of UTI is mostly due to Enlarged Prostate which is very common at this age.

Please consult qualified Urologist for clinical and Digital rectal examination ad get following basic test done to confirm the diagnosis.
1) Routine urine test and Urine culture
2) Ultrasound Scanning of abdomen and pelvis with specific mention of post void urine residue
3) Serum PSA..

In the mean while start taking broad spectrum antibiotics like Cefexime along with urinary antiseptic like Nitrofurantoin twice daily and urine alkaliser thrice daily.Later on switch on to appropriate antibiotics as per culture report.

Get the prescription of medicines from your family Physician.

Ensure to drink more water. To keep your urine dilute This will help to control foul smelling of urine and normalize colour of urine .

Further treatment will be decided by concerned urologist depending upon clinical findings and results of these tests.

Not diabetic, no problems at night, if I drink a glass of water I'd urinate it out less than an hour later. Had a PSA test a few months ago (negative results).

Is there Meds for an enlarged prostrate?

Brief Answer:
You can take Tamsulosin once daily.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for follow up.

Enlarged prostate has to be confirmed by doing Ultrasound Scanning and digital rectal examination by a qualified Urologist.

If confirmed You can take Tamsulosin once daily under the prescription of your doctor.

High coloured urine with foul smelling is due to concentrated urine which can be controlled with drinking more water and antibiotics suggested earlier.

Thanks and Regards.
