Suggest Treatment For Recurrent Urinary Tract Infection

default
Posted on Tue, 4 Apr 2017
Question: Hello doctor. I am suffering from frequent urinary infections. That is, different bacteria each time and almost every menstrual cycle. It gets aggravated due to physical contact and I am almost fearing contact now due to more than 6 infections by now. 24 hours after contact, I see symptoms like itching and burning. My husband has done his semen culture and its normal. I was also done blood tests to reveal kidney functions and it looks fine too. I am fed up of taking injections and tablets. Only last week, I took a course of Amikacin injections for 10 days. And my repeat culture was normal. I was ok too. But, after contact, I am feeling symptoms again. Should I go for cystoscopy? My gynec asks me to wait. But, this is hindering my pregnancy plans. I am so worried. I came across supplements like D Mannose. Can I take something like that? Please suggest me something. I am totally clueless.

Cystoscopy advised

Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Recurrent urinary tract infection should be properly investigated for.
Cystoscopy is advised in such cases if causes like renal stones, sexually transmitted diseases and diabetes are ruled out.
You can take syrups containing cranberry extracts for 4-6 weeks which are known to treat recurrent UTIs.
Moreover, fosfomycin is one of the potent drug which can be given weekly for 4-6 weeks to treat this condition.
You can consult a nephrologist to get properly examined , investigated and treated accordingly.

Thank you for the reply doctor. I am not diabetic and my gynec said after this cycle, she will decide the mode of investigation. Before cystoscopy, she advised baseline kidney scan. Fosfomycin is a supplement? Can I take it? what will be the dosage? Also, can recurrent UTIs affect pregnancy?

Brief Answer:
Fosfomycin is antibiotic

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
Fosfomycin is antibiotic and should be taken after proper investigations. Dosage depends upon the severity of infection and has to be decided by the treating doctor.
Recurrent UTI can hamper the growth of fetus in pregnancy, can lead to preterm labour.
It is better to treat it before planning pregnancy.
