Brief Answer:
All red bumps are not worrisome...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand you been working with Dr Basti on this platform, but since the doctor seems unavailable I shall take this opportunity to answer your question.

All red bumps are not sinister. Usually they are related to simple infection or allergic inflammation. Could you describe the size and location of bumps? Is it painful / itchy? Do you see pus points on it?
Can you upload few good quality pictures on this page?

Awaiting your reply...

Brief Answer:
Blocked gland...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I see a small papule with not much redness in this picture. It seems to represent a blocked gland. It doesn't seem to be infected yet, as the amount of erythema (redness) is not significant.

I would not be worried about this bump. It should heal without untoward incidence if you do not pick / handle it excessively. Apply warm compress on it. You may also apply a thin layer of antiseptic ointment over the bump. We can try other treatment based on it progress over the next few days.

There are no definitive features of herpes or any other sexually transmitted infections. So do not be worried about it.

Hope I am clear. Let me know if you need clarifications.

I have sore throat when I wokeup in the morning. I drank cold coconut water and icecream last night. Is that the cause? Or something else?

I see another bump near it.

Brief Answer:
Picture of new lesions...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Apologies for late reply...

Some of my patients do report similar reports after particular diet. However there are no enough evidence to relate food with blocked glands/folliculitis. Therefore I would say cold coconut water or the ice cream are not the cause.

Most likely the second bump is similar to the current one. Basically this area of the face is riddled with mutilple glands and hair follicles. They are prone to get blocked due to unknown reasons. Dirt and pollution are associated as a cause in many cases.
I would appreciate if you can send new pictures to me.

Brief Answer:
Keep it dry and clean until then.

Detailed Answer:
Right... Until then avoid handling it with bare fingers. Do not pick or pop it. Keep it as clean and dry as possible. Topical antiseptic cream can be applied over it.

Brief Answer:
Unclear pictures...

Detailed Answer:
Over the last 10 years and more I have had opportunities to see herpes lesions. And the first picture you sent was not even close to usual herpes vescicles/blistersing lesion.
The current set of pictures you sent is unclear. The light reflection and close up snap made it difficult to analyse them. Will you be able to send better pictures than what was uploaded. Until then I shall stick to my primary response - blocked glands or hair follicle infection and NOT herpes.

Brief Answer:
Do not resemble herpes...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Pictures that you sent do not resemble herpes lesions. It's consistent with blocked sebaceous gland or a bening skin / follicle infection. I wouldn't suspect herpes from these pictures.

Do not be worried. Follow my earlier suggestions and you will be fine.

Hope this is clear and convincing.

Hi Doctor,
I went to a massage parlor today and it was looking clean and tidy, I had a body massage. But nothing else and I had some boils on my shoulders and she applied the oil for massaging. Am I at any risk of getting any infection? I know in US many people have HSV, is there a risk? Could you please help me? I am worried :(
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. Prasad J (20 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Risks of infection is exceedingly low....

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

Yes, you are right.. Most of us not only in the US, but most people across the globe are infected with HSV and many of these still don't know they are infected because they remain asymptomatic throughout life.

Herpes can spread from even from an asymptomatic individual with close / sensual contact. But the chance of spread from the route you just described is vanishingly low. I will not be overly worried about herpes in this context.

Hope your doubts are cleared.

May I know why you think it is low? Just want to clarify...
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. Prasad J (56 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Current clinical evidences...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Herpes is shed out through active lesions and cold sore. Sometimes they are shed out via normal skin and exposure during the time of active shedding leads to herpes transmission. Current medical tests are not able to figure out when an infected individual or a carrier is shedding virus. Therefore we rely on personal experience and study reports. Sexual intercourse and close intimate contact are two means where herpes transmission are likely. Therefore I said, this body massage without intimate contact is less likely to transfer herpes to you.

That being said, only means to have conclusive evidence is through lab tests. If your fear of herpes is not alleviated I suggest you go for tests over the next 3-4 months.

I didn't have any intimate sexual contact. Ok if it is worth testing I will go for a test. but am I safe? Also how to remain safe?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. Prasad J (15 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Definitely worth testing...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The past exposure (which you discussed with Dr. Basti) and the red bumps are not how we classically relate herpes with. And the latest contact is not serious enough to cause an herpes out break. There are facts that I present based on current clinical practice. However current medical science is not well advanced and we still have a lot to figure out how and when herpes transmission occurs. Therefore it is always worthwhile to consider herpes tests when one has the fear of infection.

At this point, as discussed earlier most of us knowingly or unknowingly exposed to herpes. Therefore if you choose to test for Herpes antibodies, please go get both IgG and IgM antibody tested to differentiate between recent and old (settled infections). Your local doctor can help you here.

Hope this information suffices.
