Suggest Treatment For Reduced Hemacrit And Hemoglobin Levels
Question: I am currently taking large daily doses of Synthroid for total thyoid replacement following thyroid cancer in 1985. My hemacrit and Hemoglobin have gradually dropped to where I am now slightly anemic. I take two iron tablets daily but am well aware they be taken at least 4 hours after the Synthroid. I have read where Synthroid, over the years, will gradually inhibit the absorption of iron into the blood. This is symptomless and is detected only through my regular TSH screening tests. Please advise.
Brief Answer:
Iron and synthroid
Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern.
Synthroid sholdnt be taken together with any other drugs. Atleast an hour gap should be there. In fact, iron affects the absorption of synthroid rather than synthroid affect the iron absorption.
For low haemoglobin, you need to undergo few investigations like Iron studies, stool occult blood, celiac serology etc. Milk and antacids inmpairs absorption of iron. This has to be kept in mind.
