Brief Answer:
Guaifenesin is safe.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

For most people, guaifenesin is a safe medication to take. It is a mucolytic that will thin the secretions and help him to clear them out more easily. For it to work well, he should drink a lot of water with it. He can take 400 mg up to every 4 hour or as needed, or the extended release 600 mg which lasts 6 hr, 1200 mg lasts 12 hours.

Nasal saline spray such as Simply Saline or NeilMed can relive congestion too.

If you list all of his medications, I can provide further information of what other possibilities there are for him to take. Thanks.
