Suggest Treatment For Severe Abdominal Bloating

default
Posted on Fri, 18 Aug 2017
Question: My husband is nearly 89 and is in generally good health. All summer he has been "roasting" hot, and constantly turns the air conditioning on when I don't need it at all. He also has bloating above his waistline,
although he eats very little and walks a lot every day. He does have Hashimoto's thyroiditis and takes medicine for it. Could the problems mentioned above have a thyroid connection?

Brief Answer:
Thyroid may be a cause of these symptoms, tests recommended

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for asking at healthcaremagic.

I carefully read your question and understand your concern.

Thyroiditis might cause symptoms similar to the ones your husband has but on other hand they can be caused by other conditions also. If the thyroid is not functioning well can affect appetite, energy, tolerance to heat or cold, can affect weight, bowel movement, mood, etc.

To be sure if the thyroid is the cause of his symptoms it is advisable to have a check of the thyroid function.
The tests that are recommended for this is TSH and FT4.

Is you husband not taking Levothyroxine? Generally this is the drug of choice when a patient has Hashimoto Thyroiditis and thyroid function is low.

If your husband is having treatment for Thyroiditis and he has not checked these levels in the last 6 months, this would be a very good first step to make sure his thyroid is ok.

So to conclude i would say:
1. there are several causes of the symptoms your husband has as they are not very typical
2. thyroid is one of the causes and having the tests done is a good first step into the diagnosis

I hope this is helpful and answers to your question but please feel free to reply in case more clarification is needed on this.

Kind regards,
